Congratulations to our wonderful Pre-school staff on being declared ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted after their inspection on 17 March.
They are a strong, caring, gifted team and we are very proud of them. They work so hard to give the children the very best and they really deserve this official encouragement.
Here is the full report:

“I am confident that being part of St. James’ Pre-school has prepared my son well for his new adventure.” Parent – July 2015
Many families return to our friendly setting knowing that their child is at the heart of everything we do.
Our Pre-school is well established with over 40 years’ experience of caring for and nurturing young children.
We offer learning through play following the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum’ to children from the age of 2 years up to school age. Some children stay with us until they start Reception (Foundation 2).
We are well respected both within the local community and by Ofsted.
Session times until end of the Summer term 2017
We offer 7 sessions a week.
Mornings: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
9.15 a.m. to 11.45 a.m.
Afternoons: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday
1.00 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.
- Qualified and dedicated staff
- Small nurturing environment with strong staff/child ratios
A child may be registered on the waiting list at any age.
There is currently a surge in demand for pre-school places within Woodley so we would advise early registration.
Children may start St James’ Pre-School from the age of 2 years if parents feel they are ready.
To help their child settle, a parent is welcome to stay for all or part of a session if they wish.
If your child starts pre-school before the age of 3 years, the fees are £11.50 a session for the school year 2016-2017.
When children reach 3 years of age by the start of a term, they are then funded by Wokingham Borough Council for up to 15 hours a week.
Some 2 year olds are also funded according to social circumstances. Funding may be split between 2 settings.

Some parents like to get involved in the life of their child’s pre-school and there are many opportunities to do this. This includes joining one of our committees.
In March 2017 Ofsted rated us as ‘Outstanding’. Their report included the following commendations:
“Children enjoy exploring the wide range of exciting activities that staff design.”
“Children have very high standards of behaviour and confidence. Staff nurture children’s very high levels of emotional well-being.”
“Close working relationships help parents to be fully involved in their children’s learning and care.”
“All children make exceptional progress from their individual starting points and are very well-prepared for their next stage in learning.”
“The staff at St. James’ Pre-School made my daughter very welcome and she bonded very well with her key person. My daughter has gained in confidence thanks to their help”. Parent – March 2015
“I would like to say how wonderful all the teachers have been at St. James’ Pre-School. It has been a fantastic introduction to school life for them both and they have thoroughly enjoyed their time there!” Parent – April 2015
“My daughter had a wonderful time at Pre-School and grew fond of all the staff. She loved the garden, finding snails and looking for frogs! She loved the Snow White outfit. It’s a shame to be leaving”. Parent – April 2015
“The pre-school team have been exceptional in understanding my son and developing his imagination. His vocabulary and numerical skills are utterly wonderful; I know it is owed a great deal to the staff of St. James. I am confident that being part of St. James Pre-school has prepared him well for his new adventure. It will be a sad goodbye to the hardworking and dedicated team.” Parent – July 2015
